Marysville Practice

We are a modern practice priding ourselves in offering personal and friendly health care. We are located in a specifically designed building which enables us to offer many services under one roof. We currently have the following:

  • Spacious consulting rooms also used by midwives, podiatrists (foot specialist), drug and alcohol misuse workers, pharmacists, phlebotomists (taking blood samples) and our Research Nurse
  • Treatment room - for carrying out practical procedures
  • Surgical suite upstairs for minor operations
  • Physiotherapy room
  • Counselling rooms
  • Conference room

The practice is fully accessible to the disabled and a lift is available to the upper floor as well as the main staircase.

DOCTORS

Dr Richard Evans MBBS, DRCOG

Qualified in St Mary’s Hospital London in 1980 and trained in General Practice in Portsmouth before moving to Newtown, Powys where he was a GP for 15 years. He is married to Ursula, the MRC nurse attached to the practice and they have three children. He works full time Monday to Friday and also represents the practice on the Locality Commissioning Board.

Dr James Muir MBBS, FRCS(Ed), MRCGP, AKC

Qualified in medicine from Kings College Hospital, London in 1985. After training in surgery, he moved to General Practice and worked in Bromley Kent as a GP from 1993 to 2003 when he joined Marysville.  He usually works here on Monday and  Wednesday and also carries out surgical procedures at Marysville for the surgery and the PCT including dermatology and vasectomies. Dr Muir has a special interest in diabetes and runs the diabetic clinics at the surgery. He is also a medical officer for a medical charity

Dr Julia Visick MBChB, MRCGP, DRCOG

Graduated in Birmingham in 1996 and afterwards worked in several practices in Shropshire before joining Marysville in 2005. She works generally on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Her interests are in Family Planning and coil fitting; Respiratory  problems and she performs lung function tests for the practice. She also supervises the Specialist Training (ST) GPs whilst they are attached to the practice

As an accredited Training Practice we usually have an ST2 doctor on either a 6 month or 12 month placement, Dr Shantanau Saggi started his 6 month placement on 3rd August 2011.

ST GPs will need to video some of their consultations and your permission will always be sought before this is done and no offence will be taken if you decline; please note that the ceiling mounted video camera cannot see anything inside the curtained area and that all video consultations can be monitored in real time by Dr Julia Visick who has overall responsibility for VTS doctors training whilst they are at Marysville.  For more details of the VTS scheme go to http://www.shropshirevts.com/contact.htm

We have to undergo regular assessment to retain out training status and this includes a formal inspection every 3 years, we were last inspected in July 2009 when our status was renewed for another 3 years.

Practice Nurses

Sister Gill Richards (RGN and Diploma Orthopaedic Nursing)

Gill joined in 2002 and tends to work Wednesday-Friday. She runs the diabetic clinics and also is nurse lead for childhood immunisations. She has previous experience in A+E and orthopaedics.

Sister Karen Draycott (RGN)

Karen joined us in December 2010, she is an experienced Practice Nurse who previously worked in a large practice in Burton-On-Trent. She is the nurse lead for Asthma/COPD and for some aspects of Coronary Heart Disease.

HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT (HCA)

Gail Cheadle

Gail is already an experienced phlebotomist and on wef 1st December 2010 she starts training to become a HCA. This will involve on-the-job training by our practice nurses and GPs plus study at T-CAT in Telford to gain the underlying  knowledge.  Her role and list of duties will expand as she progresses through her training but she is helping with new patient checks and in some of the processes in the 40-75 year old 'MOTs'top of page>

COMMUNITY District Nurses (DNs)

In 2008 Shropshire County PCT decided to relocate all DNs into two geographical teams North and South, as a result of which our DNs were merged into the south team in late 2008 & moved out of the practice to the Copthorne South site on 7th April 2009 where they will continue to serve Mytton Oak practice patients as well as Marysville patients. Their direct telephone number is 261298.

Referrals are accepted from a wide variety of sources including GP’s, hospitals, other health care professionals, social services, care agencies, families and patients themselves. They strictly only visit patients who are housebound although this could be due to permanent disability or temporary incapacity i.e. due to an operation.

 They offer skilled nursing care for a wide variety of needs including palliative care, chronic illness, post operative, catheter and wound care.

Physiotherapists

We have two physiotherapists attached to the practice, they have their own dedicated clinic room on the first floor. Mrs Elspeth Boy sees patients on a Tuesday morning and Mr Andy Langs sees patients on a Thursday morning.

Health Visitor (HV)

Kathy Fisher (RSON, RGN, RHV)

Our Health Visitor is a qualified paediatric nurses with further specialist training in all aspects of child care and development in the under 5’s.

Kathy's specialist interests and areas of work are; paediatric liaison at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, coordinates care of Next Infant Scheme for Shropshire and is the Health Visitor representative on the working group for children at specific risk of anaphylaxis supporting families and health professionals involved with these children.

Patients can contact our Health Visitors on 01743 452300 if they have any concerns about the health and wellbeing of the under 5’s. NB as part of the PCTs community staffing review  Kathy relocated to the Harlescott Enterprise Park in early March 2008 but this will not effect the service that they and the rest of the team provide. As a result of the move we lost the services our of second HV who has not been replaced.

Phlebotomist (take blood samples)

Yvonne Crowther

Our phlebotomists are experienced medical receptionists who have been trained in all aspects of blood taking. We have a phlebotomist available every morning Monday to Friday.  Please note that they are not trained to help or diagnose clinical problems. For these a separate appointment needs to be made with the practice nurse or GP.

Counsellors

Mike Flinn joined us in September 2010

Mike has been a counsellor for 14 years and is experienced in working with couples, individuals and families, and most of the issues that life can bring.

He is also counsellor and trainer with Relate, as well as having his own coaching, mentoring and training business.

If you wish to be put on the waiting list ask for the counselling form at reception. You may find it useful to see your GP first, to discuss whether any medical tests or help is needed in addition to seeing Mike.

Kate Roberts Nurse Advisor

As part of a PCT initiative to reduce waiting times Kate will be seeing Marysville patients who have previously been referred to Chaddeslode house Kate will be working in the practice to offer screening, assessment and short term supportive interventions for common mental health problems.

Substance Misuse Worker

We have a worker attached to the surgery, Mrs Vicky Dudley, who has a clinic on Monday afternoon to support the drug and alcohol misuse programme.

Macmillan Nurses

We have strong links with our two nurses who provide support and advice to patients with a diagnosis of cancer. We regularly meet with them, the practice nurses and the district nurses to improve communication about patient care.

MRC Nurse

Sister Ursula Evans

The Medical Research Council coordinate trials some of which are based in general practice. Patients are invited to participate when eligible but full consent will always be sought. Patients are free to leave these trials or decline to participate at any time.

MIDWIFE

 A community midwife and her colleagues will see you in the surgery on a Tuesday morning as well as visiting you at home, her clinic is from 10 am to 1130 am. She will provide your antenatal care together with your GP.  The midwives are based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Tel: 261000 Ext 3868. If they are all out there is an answer phone to allow you to leave a message and they will get back to you.  Please note that this is not a drop-in clinic, you do need to book an appointment to a midwife, if there are no appointments booked she will not come in.

 

Business Manager/Practice Manager

Brian Canfer

Brian joined the practice in 2006 having previously managed another surgery for ten years and having also served 30 years in the RAF as a Navigator and Staff Officer.  He is responsible for  the running of the practice as a whole, he tends to look ahead and plan strategically but also deals with the day-to-day financial, IT and HR  issues.  He is usually here 3 days a week Monday - Wednesday, when he is not here his duties are undertaken by Mrs Janet Pascall.

Deputy Practice Manager

Janet Pascall

Janet joined the practice in 1994 and is responsible for the day to day running of the reception and administration areas of the Practice.

Janet works alongside the Practice Manager and together they endeavour to maintain an efficient and proficient service for the patients of Marysville.

If patients have any comments, questions or concerns Janet will be pleased to speak to them.

Sue deals with referral letters and also chases up results and missing information.

Receptionists

Our reception team are on hand to assist patients in making appointments, deal with repeat prescription requests and help with any queries patients may have. Each member of the team have their own administrative areas and will assist patients whenever possible. Our telephones are answered personally and there are no automated messages apart from Out of Hours message.  We sometimes participate in the Modern Apprentice scheme so you may encounter younger than normal receptionists who are training for NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.

Carol has been with us since January 2006 and assists with minor operations including vasectomies.
