Marysville Practice
We are a modern practice priding ourselves in offering personal and friendly health care. We are located in a specifically designed building which enables us to offer many services under one roof. We currently have the following:
- Spacious consulting rooms also used by midwives, podiatrists (foot specialist), drug and alcohol misuse workers, pharmacists, phlebotomists (taking blood samples) and our Research Nurse
- Treatment room- for carrying out practical procedures
- Surgical suite upstairs for minor operations
- Health Visitor clinic room for baby clinics
- District Nursing Team room
- Physiotherapy room
- Counselling room
- Conference room
We hope to expand the range of services in the future.
The practice is fully accessible to the disabled and a lift is available to the upper floor as well as the main staircase.
DOCTORS
Dr Richard Evans MBBS, DRCOG
Qualified in St Mary’s Hospital London in 1980 and trained in General Practice in Portsmouth before moving to Newtown, Powys where he was a GP for 15 years. He is married to Ursula, the MRC nurse attached to the practice and they have three children. He works full time Monday to Friday. He supervises the medical students attached to the practice.Dr James Muir MBBS, FRCS(Ed), MRCGP, AKC
Qualified in medicine from Kings College Hospital, London in 1985. After training in surgery, he moved to General Practice and worked in Bromley Kent as a GP since 1993. He usually works Monday, Wednesday and Friday and also carries out surgical procedures for the surgery and the PCT including vasectomies. DR Muir has a special interest in diabetes and runs the diabetic clinics at the surgery. He is also a medical officer for a medical charity (see www.medic-assist.org).Dr Julia Visick MBChB, MRCGP, DRCOG
Graduated in Birmingham in 1996 and afterwards worked in several practices in Shropshire. She works generally on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Her interests are in Family Planning and coil fitting; Respiratory (breathing) Problems and she performs lung function tests for the practice. She supervises the Foundation Year 2(FY2) education (qualified doctors gaining experience in general practice). She also sits on the Locality Commissioning Board.Student GPs
As an accredited Training Practice we also have FY2 doctors
between April and July each year and Keele University Medical
students between October and January each year, patients will always
be asked if they agree to students being present and there is no
pressure for you to agree.
Practice Nurses
Sister Barbara Devey (HND and BSc Nursing)
Barbara joined in 2001 and normally works Monday- Wednesday. She has a special interest in travel health, stoma care and smoking cessation as well as assisting with minor operations. She has previous experience in surgical care.
Sister Gill Richards (RGN and Diploma Orthopaedic Nursing)
Gill joined in 2002 and tends to work Wednesday-Friday. She runs
the diabetic clinics and also is nurse lead for childhood immunisations.
She has previous experience in A+E and orthopaedics.
Sister Rosalind Thomas (RGN)
Rosalind joined the practice in January 2008 as was recruited for her expertise in childhood immunisations following the reorganisation of this service in Shropshire. She normally works all day on a Thursday and can carry out the full range of nursing duties in addition to the immunisations. Rosalind has previous hospital and general practice experience.

The district nursing team structure has been reviewed and the PCT have decided to relocate all DNs into two clusters, this means that at some time early next year the DNs will move to the Copthorne South site where they will continue to serve Mytton Oak practice patients as well as Marysville patients.
Referrals are accepted from a wide variety of sources including GP’s, hospitals, other health care professionals, social services, care agencies, families and patients themselves. They strictly only visit patients who are housebound although this could be due to permanent disability or temporary incapacity i.e. due to an operation.
They offer skilled nursing care for a wide variety of needs including palliative care, chronic illness, post operative, catheter and wound care.
If you have a nursing need, are housebound and wish to contact the district nurses please telephone 276019 between the hours of 8.30am and 3.30pm
Health Visitors
Kathy Fisher (RSON, RGN, RHV)
Judith Mennell (BSc Hons, RHV, RSCN, RGN)
Both of our Health Visitors are qualified paediatric nurses with further specialist training in all aspects of child care and development in the under 5’s.
Kathy's specialist interests and areas of work are; paediatric liaison at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, coordinates care of Next Infant Scheme for Shropshire and is the Health Visitor representative on the working group for children at specific risk of anaphylaxis supporting families and health professionals involved with these children. Judith's special interest is maternal peri-natal mental health, working with women experiencing pregnancy related depression. However both also have a wider role in public health.
Patients can contact our Health Visitors on 01743 452300 if they have any concerns about the health and wellbeing of the under 5’s. NB as part of the PCTs community staffing review Kathy and Judith relocated to the Harlescott Enterprise Park in early March 2008 but this will not effect the service that they and the rest of the team provide.

Phlebotomists (take blood samples)
Yvonne Crowther
Trainee Gail Cheadle
Our phlebotomists have been trained in all aspects of blood taking. We have phlebotomy on a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday and Friday morning. Please note that they are not trained to help with clinical problems. For these a separate appointment needs to be made with the practice nurse or GP. These dates may vary whilst Gail is trained
Counsellors
Helen Orton
Helen qualified as a counsellor at Bangor University in 1998 & has worked as a counsellor in the NHS for 10 years. Helen uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT) as her principal approach. Helen is also a counsellor trainer and works part-time at SCAT. From time to time we may also offer her students placements in the surgery.
If you wish to be put on the waiting list ask for the counselling form at reception. You may find it useful to see your GP first, to discuss whether any medical tests or help is needed in addition to seeing Helen.
Kate Roberts
As part of a PCT initiative to reduce waiting times Kate will be
seeing Marysville patients who have previously been referred to
Chaddeslode house.
Kate will be working in the practice for 1 year from June 2008 to
offer screening, assessment and short term supportive interventions
for common mental health problems.
Substance Misuse Worker
We have a worker attached to the surgery, Miss Sorrell Whittle, who has a clinic on Monday afternoon to support the drug and alcohol misuse programme.
Macmillan Nurses
We have strong links with our two nurses who provide support and advice to patients with a diagnosis of cancer. We regularly meet with them, the practice nurses and the district nurses to improve communication about patient care.
MRC Nurse
Sister Ursula Evans
The Medical Research Council coordinate trials some of which are based in general practice. Patients are invited to participate when eligible but full consent will always be sought. Patients are free to leave these trials or decline to participate at any time.
Practice Manager/Business Manager
Brian Canfer
Brian joined in 2006 having previously managed another surgery
and having previously served 30 years in the RAF as a navigator and Staff
Officer. He is responsible for the running of the practice
as a whole, and deals in particular with the financial and HR issues.
He is normally here 3 days a week Monday - Wednesday.
Deputy Practice Manager
Janet Pascall
Janet joined the practice in 1994 and is responsible for the day to day running of the reception and administration areas of the Practice.
Janet works alongside the Practice Manager and together they endeavour to maintain an efficient and proficient service for the patients of Marysville.
If patients have any comments, questions or concerns Janet will be pleased to speak to them.
Secretary
Sue Llewellyn
Sue deals with referral letters and also chases up results and missing information.
Receptionists
Our reception team are on hand to assist patients in making appointments, deal with repeat prescription requests and help with any queries patients may have. Each member of the team have their own administrative areas and will assist patients whenever possible. Our telephones are answered personally and there are no automated messages apart from Out of Hours message. We participate in the Modern Apprentice scheme so you may encounter younger than normal receptionists who are training for NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.
Pharmacist
We have a pharmacist from the PCT who helps us prescribe effectively and improve our medication management.
Theatre Nurse Sister
Carol Beacock
Carol has been with us since January 2006 and assists with minor operations including vasectomies.
