CLINICS
The following clinics take place in the surgery on a regular basis
DIABETIC CLINIC
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS- monthly approx
Diabetic patients who are not being regularly reviewed at hospital will need to attend this clinic either every 6 months or yearly depending on their circumstances. Blood tests will be required before the appointment. This clinic aims to cover most areas of diabetic control in one visit as appointments are made with;
NURSE- to record blood pressure, dietary advice, urine test, height and weight
DOCTOR- to alter medication/give advice depending on the health checks and blood test results
PODIATRIST- to assess and check for foot related problems common in diabetics
EYE CHECKS- still have to be carried out at the hospital and patients will be invited to attend this screening yearly
Patients will usually be invited to this clinic by letter or reminded when attending the surgery for another matter. If you feel you should be seen in this clinic please enquire at reception.
MINOR SURGERY
2nd and 4th Mondays afternoons of each month for Marysville patients
Thanks to our new building we have a surgical suite upstairs which allows us to have regular clinics for our own patients but also provide sessions for the PCT.
parents, babies and toddler sessions
Following the PCT's restructuring of community nursing we no longer have baby clinics on site, instead parents can take babies and toddlers to one of the following clinics:-
Monday Bayston Hill Methodist Church Hall 1400-1530
Tuesday Either Albert Road Medical Practice 1330-1530 or
Tuesday Pontesbury Medical Centre 1400-1600
Wednesday Louise House, Meole Brace 0930-1130
Friday Either Princess House, The Square, Shrewsbury town centre 1000-1400 or Richmond House, Rutland, Harlescott 1000-1200
IMMUNISATION CLINICS
These are held on a Thursday between 0830-1230 and 1330-1730. Sister Gillian Richards runs these clinics.
DRUG MISUSE CLINIC
A member of the Community Substance Misuse Team, Mrs Vicky Dudley, holds clinics twice a week at the surgery( Monday and Thursday). Dr Evans is also involved in these clinics. Referral is through one of the GPs.
ANTENATAL CLINIC
On Tuesdays mornings a midwife is in the surgery. The GPs also share pregnancy care but there is no specific time for these appointments.
PHYSIOTHERAPY
We are fortunate to have regular physiotherapy clinics in the specially designed room upstairs in the building. Patients need to see a GP to be referred and patients will then be contacted by letter asking them to phone to make an appointment. As physiotherapy sessions are high in demand a waiting list is in operation.
ASTHMA/HEART DISEASE/BLOOD PRESSURE
We have made the decision not to have designated clinics for these checks as this would restrict your appointment times. Instead the appointments can be made at your convenience. Asthma checks and blood pressure reviews are usually with the practice nurses unless there are known problems.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH CHECKS
Whilst we are not in a position to offer these checks we would advise all
patients to contact their employer to discuss the risks involved in
their occupation and where necessary to have the appropriate
immunisation e.g. Hepatitis B. We are only aware of one companies
offering this service in Shrewsbury, the Wellcompany, telephone
01743 283280.
KEEPING FIT?
Whilst it's not the answer for everyone cycling is a good way to keep fit and also save money. Shropshire Council are promoting more use of cycles, why not look at their website Cycle Shrewsbury Your GP may feel that you would benefit from some exercise classes using a scheme called
Exercise on REFERRAl
The Exercise on
Referral scheme aims to help people with limiting physical or
medical conditions to improve their health through supported and
structured exercise following a fitness assessment. The assessment
ensures that the exercise programme followed is suitable for the
individual's needs and capabilities.
The scheme consists
of a 12-week exercise block, which includes a half-hour fitness
assessment, a 10 week exercise programme and a half-hour
reassessment.
It can be delivered
to clients with a range of physical and mental health conditions
such as:
- obesity
-
muscular-skeletal disorder
-
psychological disorders
- diabetes
-
respiratory diseases
- joint
replacement
- arthritis
-
osteoporosis
- heart
disease
- high/low
blood pressure
-
anxiety/depression
Classes are led by an Instructor and consist of either gym based
activities or low-level water workout in a swimming pool.
Our Instructors are
qualified in Exercise Referral, which allows them to work with
patients experiencing the conditions listed above. They also have a
minimum of a Level 2 qualification in Anatomy and Physiology and
proven experience of working in the leisure sector.
Patients can be
referred to an exercise scheme by their GP, practice nurse or health
professional. Forms will be completed by the referring health
professional.
Patients
can remain on the scheme for 12 months without having to be
re-referred from their GP/Health Professional. After 12 months,
patients should consult with their GP or health professional as to
whether there is a need to continue on the scheme or whether another
more suitable option is available. In order for the patient to
continue on the scheme, they must be referred by their GP/Health
Professional again.
Please note that this is not a free scheme.
