Lord Darzi's Review

You will doubtless of heard and read much in the media about this review and the changes that the government are intending to impose on all practices regardless of their need.  The Royal College of GPs has produced a factsheet to provide what we feel is a more balanced view of general practice, to read the factsheet click here

As you are all probably aware HMG are determined to extend the opening hours of at least 50% of all GP surgeries in UK regardless of need.  Without going into the details the vast majority of GPs have now agreed to consider the new arrangements but at the time of writing this newsletter neither we, nor the PCT had the necessary fine print to make a balanced decision.  You may not be aware but changes are being implied by HMG on almost a weekly basis and that’s no way to plan changes which could affect the majority of staff and all GPs.  In the last patient survey >90% of patients were satisfied with our opening hours and we do not wish to do anything to upset this.

However, when planning permission was given for the surgery certain restrictions were placed on us in respect of opening hours.  To ask for these restrictions to be varied involves making a full application and paying a full fee every time, consequently, in order to be able to respond to patients wishes we have applied to have the restrictions varied so that we can be much more flexible in our opening hours should the doctors feel this is necessary.  This will take at least 10 weeks to be processed. The application was picked up by the Shropshire Star who wrote an article before speaking to us, they have now asked for our comment and the doctors have released the following statement

Press release dated 31st March 2008

“The finer details of the extended hours plan are not yet available, we are currently asking patients for their views on extended hours and this application is simply to cover all options should we decide that extended hours are required.  At present no decision has been made. As the most modern and most spacious GP surgery in Shrewsbury we are keen to offer the best possible service to meet the needs of patients.”

In the mean time our receptionists are asking all patients who contact the surgery, what their views are.

Minor Injuries

We are happy to treat patients with minor injuries but if we feel it appropriate e.g. the need for an X-ray, then we may have to refer you to A&E at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

Book Appointments On-Line

You can now book appointments on line H24 but to be fair to all patients not all appointments are available on-line.  To use this service you must first register for EMISaccess, in person, at reception.

Training Doctors

From April 2007 we  have been able to have a FY2 (Final Year 2) doctor at the practice for 4 months. They are fully qualified doctors but are on a rotation of different specialties which includes spending time in general practice. They will be able to see patients and prescribe on their own but will be under supervision of one of the GP Partners. We feel training young doctors is important and has many benefits for the practice as a whole. Dr Bharat Kandi Konda joins us on 2nd April 2008 as this year FY2 doctor.

Patient Satisfaction Survey Results

We now have the results back from this years survey. Overall we scored very highly, improving on previous years. Your comments have been noted and will be considered.

Practice Opening Times :

Mon-Fri: 8:30am - 6:00pm

Unlike most other surgeries the telephones are not closed at lunchtimes so that appointments can be made at any time. Prescriptions can also be collected throughout the day.

It is also possible to drop off prescription requests outside of these hours. We now have a mailbox, fitted to the pedestrian entrance in the perimeter fence to allow you to do this when the surgery is closed. Please see the prescriptions page for easier ways to obtain your prescription.
