COVID restriction update
Throughout the pandemic we have strived to make the surgery as safe as possible for all our patients and staff. We will continue to do so going forward.
From the 19th July nothing will change at the surgery – patients will need to still wear a mask, socially distance and use hand sanitiser in the surgery and staff will continue to wear PPE. We do understand that it can be frustrating but we know that when people come to us they are sick and vulnerable (and some cannot receive the COVID vaccinations due to medical reasons) so we feel it would be wrong to not take these small precautions that can protect people.
In terms of opening up, as many of you know, we have never been shut and in fact have consulted with much higher numbers of patients than we did pre-COVID (face to face, by phone, by e consult and by video), not counting vaccinating 90% of the adult population twice in the last 6 months.
The local community has come so far in trying to minimise the impact of COVID and we are sure you understand that we need to keep the surgery as safe for ALL patients as we can.
From the Institute of General Practice Managers (IGPM)
Every day General Practice staff across the UK receive verbal, and sometimes physical abuse from the very people they are trying to help. This abuse must stop. It is not ok for our staff to be subjected to aggressive and abusive language when they are doing their job. The words that patients use stay with our staff long after they have finished their shift. Some become hardened to it, some think it’s part of the job. Others go home and cry, some might leave because they just can’t face another day of rude and aggressive language.
Please watch this video which has been made by staff from UK general practices and remember, we are always doing our best often in very difficult and challenging circumstances with limited resources.
Patient access
As a practice we are aware of the communication from NHSE and media regarding the opening up of GP receptions and appointments as of Monday 17th May. As a practice we are reviewing how we can maximise patient access, whilst maintaining safety for patients and staff safely as guidance changes.
At Marysville Medical Practice we have continued to work and support patients throughout the whole of the pandemic and continue to respond to unprecedented levels of demand. In the period March and April 2021 alone we have dealt with more calls than in any other period on record, and as a practice will continue to meet the needs of our patients as best we can, whilst continuing to support the COVID Vaccination programme.
In the short term we will continue to monitor access to the premises, and offer a triage first service in order to ensure patients are treated in the most appropriate way and will continue to offer remote consultations and appropriate face to face appointments until a safety review is completed.
We can confirm that face to face appointments HAVE continued throughout the whole of the pandemic, however we reinforce that this is following a triage first service in order to maintain the best interests of both patients and staff.
Official UK government guidance for AstraZeneca injections
The UK government has published the following guidance for AstraZeneca injections:
Astra Zeneca Covid Vaccine – Rare Side Effects – Summary
- The risk of a blood clot after Covid vaccination is about the same as on a long-haul flight, Matt Hancock, Health Secretary says
- Under-30s in the UK are to be offered an alternative Covid jab to the AstraZeneca vaccine
- There are more than enough Moderna and Pfizer vaccines for under-30s, the health secretary says
- The European regulator says unusual blood clots should be listed as very rare side effects of the AZ vaccine
Please be advised that we will be contacting any of our patients under 30 who are currently booked in to have the Astra Zeneca vaccine so that they can have an informed conversation with a GP to decide whether to have this vaccine or not. If not an alternative will be offered (Pfizer or Moderna) although we may not be able to offer an appointment date straight away due to supply levels.
If I’ve had a dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, what should I do?
If you have already had your first Astra Zeneca vaccine you should continue with your second dose appointment. You will not be able to switch vaccines at this stage. If you are under 30 and have had a jab, it means you’re at higher risk because of a health condition, or perhaps because you work in health or social care. That means the risk/benefit balance for you is probably still in favour of taking the vaccine.
Am I at risk from a clot after the second shot?
There have been no reports of the type of blood clots in question after a second dose. All 79 of the thrombocytopenia cases have been after first doses, and the JCVI advice is to ensure you continue have your second dose to ensure maximum protection.
If you are over 30 and have a vaccine appointment for your first or second dose please do not cancel your appointment. You will not get a choice of which vaccine to have unless there is a medical reason for you to have an alternative. If you have had your first dose already you will not be able to switch vaccines. It is your choice if you want to decline a first or second vaccine however you should balance and weigh the risks for you as a an individual and please be advised you may not be offered an alternative appointment.
Happy Easter!
We love being on Brook Street; this is the first time we’ve got round to taking pictures of the lovely tree decorations that some of the local residents do regularly! We had baubles at Christmas and now we’ve got painted Eggs which look brilliant especially against the lovely blossom trees. Definitely lifts the spirits on the drive into work. We can’t wait to see what the next decorations will be! Thank you Brook Street!
Easter and May Bank holiday closures
The practice will be closed on the following bank holidays:
Friday 2nd April, Monday 5th April, Monday 3rd May, Monday 31st May
If you need medical attention please dial 999 in an emergency, or 111 for medical treatment that cannot wait until the surgery is open again.
We do have Darwin Health Ltd Extended Access appointments running every weekend, Saturday and Sunday 8:30AM to 12:30PM, at Marden Medical Practice, with the exception of Sunday 4th April when all surgeries are closed. You can book into these appointments by ringing Marysville Medical Practice on 01743 276000.
Whilst we have the eConsult facility on our website please be advised that the response time is 48 working hours, so for example if you submit an eConsult on Friday 2nd April (bank holiday) the practice will likely not be able to respond until Wednesday 7th April. We would encourage you to only use eConsult during working practice hours e.g. not evenings or weekends. If you need medical attention “out of hours” then please call 111. Thank you.
Marysville Medical Practice partnership announcement
Dr Julia Visick has been the Sole GP Partner for the last few years. Dr Visick has done an incredible job on keeping the practice going but it is a hard and pressured position to be in, so we are delighted to announce that from 1st April 2021 Dr Pippa Hine, one of our salaried GPs, and Mrs Izzy Culliss, our Practice Manager will be joining her in the Partnership. Collectively they will run the practice and make joint decisions on development and strategic business decisions.
